A handful of our Switch team just returned from IBCon 2018 – a cornerstone gathering of commercial and corporate real estate, facilities and technology professionals. Held in Las Vegas, this year’s conference drew more than 2,000 leaders from 20+ countries. Here, we share our favorite conference highlights and some thought-provoking questions raised at the event (which we’ll tackle in a future post).
We arrived Tuesday, just in time for the Intelligent Buildings Bootcamp. Expertly moderated by Intelligent Buildings’ Shaun Klann, the panels featured smart building experts from Google, Coca-Cola, GGP, Oxford Properties and more. With more than 120 people in attendance, it was clear that both veterans and newcomers alike are interested in the future of smart buildings and the evolution of facilities management. But what practical applications will they take back to their teams?
The IBCon Welcome Reception was a special addition to the 2018 program in honor of the conference’s 20th anniversary. Guests had a chance to mingle while catching up on the latest challenges in the industry. What new trends will surface as a result of these opportunities being spotlighted?
Jim Young’s Opening Keynote took us on a trip down memory lane from the very first Realcomm | IBCon conference in 1998 to its present-day iteration. IBCon’s 20-year history in review left us in awe of how far we’ve come on our collective smart building journey, and led us to ask ourselves, “now what?”
The IBCon Exhibit Hall was bustling with activity as service providers, owners and operators shared their enthusiasm for efficient, connected buildings. Has CRE finally reached a tipping point in adopting new technologies?
The Digie Awards honored visionary leader, Lachlan MacQuarrie, and his company, Oxford Properties, with the Digital Impact Award and a Digie Award for Most Intelligent Building Project (Office Portfolio) respectively. Congratulations to all winners! Who will stand in the limelight in 2019?
Cocktails and conversation flowed at CliQue bar during the Intelligent Buildings Reception, where we met up with old friends and made new connections. How can we work together to accelerate the innovation of a connected smart building ecosystem?
This year’s Panel Sessions were plentiful and the array of tracks including occupant experience, smart buildings, energy, big data, cyber security and research represented the vastness of the buildings universe. How should our industry align our technological resources to address the needs of each unique building operations facet?
After the milestone 20th annual Realcomm | IBCon, we returned home with busy brains, sore feet and an overwhelming sense of optimism. We asked ourselves, how can we continue to fulfill our vision to bring people and planet to the center of building operations? Stay tuned for upcoming blogs that will dig deeper into IBCon 2018’s key themes and consider how we, as an industry, can address these important questions.
